It’s starting to warm up! Here are some quick tips before you head out to the trails with your baby or toddler.
1. Check for a trail that isn’t more than an hour away, or whatever your child’s driving tolerance is. Solo, it takes about an hour before my toddler, C, starts to get fussy.
2. Check the elevation of the trail. If your child is walking, you want to make sure there is an opportunity for them to walk as well. You can check elevation by looking at trail maps, the hiking app, photos of reviews, or my favorite app, Strava. Even tagged Instagram photos can tell you a lot about trail conditions, especially recently dated ones.
3. Weather can be a huge factor to determine if it’s worth going outside or not. Never go out in a storm or weather event – it doesn’t matter how hardcore you were before! You are now traveling with a sensitive family member. If it’s going to drizzle or be very sunny, I would recommend a shady, tree lined hike to create a natural barrier. The tree line will soften the severity of the weather and reduce the chances of getting drenched or sunburnt, respectively.
4. Change of clothes. My little brother threw himself into water when I was a kid because he wanted to touch the water. Spare clothes will make sure you’re prepared for any creative exploration….
What are some tips you have? Have you gone hiking with your little one this year?
