I’ve done at least 20 hikes with my 1 year old (C) and I think I have a good packing list down. Here are my essentials that I take every time. Instead of packing everything on this list every time, I simply leave everything in the backpack so all I have to worry about is food and loading everyone in the car. I believe this is the only way I can’t forget something.

- Hiking backpack – I was gifted this one pictured above from a friend (I think it’s from Amazon) and it works very well. It is as comfortable as my regular Arcteryx backpack, and it had plenty of storage. It also has a pop out sun/ rain shade! Everything else I bring is contained in the backpack.
- Hand mirror – the hiking backpack I have came with a small mirror which I use constantly. When C falls asleep, I check often to see if his neck is supported or if I need to change his position.
- Neck Pillow – I bring a neck pillow or baby blanket that I can roll up to support C’s neck when he inevitably falls asleep.
- First aid kit – You never know when you’ll need one and you’ll always regret not having one. Some emergencies I have experienced are stingers, cuts from thorns or rocks, friction injuries from sliding, and allergic reactions to mosquito bites. It’s better to have a small one you’ll actually bring and use that a bigger one you’ll constantly forget.
- Change of clothes/diapers- I remember when I was little, my brother threw himself into a koi pond because he wanted to touch the water… so a change of clothes always comes with me in case the little one gets some “good” ideas…
- Water and snacks – even on short hikes, I bring these in case the unexpected happens such as someone takes your car, the trail closes behind you for an emergency, or if you can’t walk and are waiting for someone to come pick you up. Choose shelf stable products like power bars and sealed dried fruits.
- Sunglasses and hat – I am sensitive to bright light so I think it’s safe to assume kids are too. I always bring a pair of sunnies in case the sun comes out, even on foggy days.

I’ve had to use each type of item and I was worth carrying it around every time. I like to think it’s not a matter of if, but when. I hope this list helps you stay safe and prepared!
